Gonzaga Opens With Win Over Cougars

Designated hitter Barry Matthews drove in five runs to lead Gonzaga to a 7-3 victory over Washington State in a non-conference baseball game at Posse Stadium in Pasco on Friday.

Gonzaga starter Steve Bennett held the Cougars to four hits and a pair of runs in six innings.

WSU (2-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by outfielder Justin Williams.

Gonzaga (1-0) did all of its damage in the sixth and seventh innings.

In the sixth, the Bulldogs sent eight men to the plate and scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead. Matthews’ three-run double capped a four-run seventh inning.

WSU’s Todd Meldahl (1-1) allowed three runs and took the loss.

The weekend series resumes today at 1 p.m. at Posse Stadium.

EWU duo top track events

Eastern Washington’s Jamie Martin and Kurt Kraemer were winners during the first day of the McDonald Team Scoring Meet in Moscow, Idaho.

Martin won the women’s 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 54 feet, 4-1/2 inches. Kraemer took first in the men’s long jump with a leap of 24-0-3/4.

Johnnie Williams placed second in the men’s 60-meter dash with a time of 6.87 seconds. University of Washington’s Ja’Warren Hooker won it with a 6.64 clocking.

Both the men’s and women’s teams split their four dual meets. They each beat Sacramento State and Portland, while losing to Washington and Idaho.

Washington State’s Jeannette Martus bettered her school-record mark by 6 inches to finish third in the pole vault at 12-7 at the first day’s competition of the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational Meet at Lincoln, Nebraska.

Kerwick ousted

Anthony Mora, of Thornton, Colo., eliminated Spokane’s Mahlon Kerwick at the U.S. Olympic Boxing Trials in Tampa, Fla.

Mora outpointed Kerwick 8-1 in the 132-pound weight class. It was Kerwick’s second straight defeat in the double-elimination format.
