Christa Brossman put a limit on her celebration time Friday night after Pullman’s important 42-35 Great Northern League girls basketball win over Lakeside.
Three hours. That was it.
Then it was time to focus on Riverside, the Greyhounds’ next opponent.
The senior wing planned to watch film late Friday of the Lakeside game, then switch tapes to Riverside.
The victory was Pullman’s first over the Eagles, and if the Greyhounds can win their 8 p.m. game today at Riverside, they will earn another first - the GNL title.
Otherwise, the three teams will share top honors.
Lakeside buried itself Friday by committing 22 turnovers, many of which were unforced.
“They looked nervous,” said Lakeside coach Lisa Schultz, whose team is in jeopardy of losing a string of five straight league championships. “We shot ourselves in the foot with unforced turnovers.”
Pullman (9-1 GNL, 15-3 overall), which honored its seniors before the game, avenged its only league loss of the season. Lakeside won the season’s first meeting by two points on a half-court buzzer-beater by sophomore Jen Barcus.
“We knew they would come out fired up (Friday),” said Brossman, who scored a game-high 19 points and shut down Barcus on defense.
“But we were fired up, too, especially after losing on a half-court shot.”
Brossman held Barcus to two points, but the 6-foot-1 post pulled down a gamehigh 10 rebounds as the Eagles (7-2, 13-3) had a 29-23 edge on the boards.
Lakeside’s only points of the third quarter were the final eight of the period that put the Eagles up 26-25.
They continued the run in the fourth with five quick points, but then the Greyhounds took over. Brossman scored at 6:41, then Sara Sheridan made two straight baskets to tie the game at 31. Brossman found Amy Chamberlain for a layin with 3:04 left that put Pullman ahead for good.
