Moses Lake Has Stranglehold In 4A

Moses Lake appears ready to lap the field at the Region IV 4A wrestling tournament at Southridge High in Kennewick.

The Chiefs dominated Friday’s opening round, advancing 11 wrestlers into today’s semifinals while piling up 64 team points.

University, with 38 points, East Valley (35-1/2) and Rogers (28) are the Chiefs’ nearest competitors. U-Hi qualified seven for today’s semifinals, EV six and Rogers five.

Three No. 1 seeds, two from the Big Nine Conference, took a loss. Moses Lake sophomore Tyson Hintz scored an 11-1 major decision over U-Hi’s Ryan Montang at 103 pounds; Gonzaga Prep sophomore Karl Koehler defeated Kennewick’s Matt Brownfield 8-6 at 145; and U-Hi senior Ben Osborn edged Eisenhower’s Angel Betancourt 1-0 at 160.

The tourney concludes today. The top four in each weight division advance to next weekend’s Mat Classic in Tacoma.

District 7 2A

Lakeside advanced 13 wrestlers into the semifinals after two rounds of the tournament at Deer Park.

The Eagles have semifinalists in every weight division except 152 and 215. Riverside advanced 10 into the semifinals, and Newport and Medical Lake advanced nine apiece.

Every No. 1 and 2 seed qualified for the semifinals.

The tourney concludes today. The top two in each weight qualify for state.

District 6/7 1A/B

Liberty Bell piled up 80 points to lead the team race after one day of the 18-team tournament at Moses Lake.

The Mountain Lions qualified eight wrestlers into today’s semifinals. Ritzville, with six wrestlers in the semifinals and 62-1/2 points, is in second place.

Colfax and Kettle Falls pushed four wrestlers each into the semifinals.

The biggest upsets occurred at 119, 125 and 171 pounds. Reardan freshman Eric Lundgren defeated top-seeded Matt Neunecker of Pateros 5-4 at 119; Brewster’s Sal Guerrero earned a 17-5 major decision over second-seeded Ryan Hamilton, a Republic sophomore, at 125; and Liberty senior Nate Leitz edged top-seeded John Scott of Oroville 12-10 at 171.

The tourney concludes today. The top five in each weight advance to state.
