Vicky Dalton Honored For Volunteerism

Vicky Dalton, Spokane County auditor, has been named American Cancer Society’s Volunteer of the Year for Spokane County.

Dalton, vice president of the society’s board, has held a number of leadership positions during her eight years as a volunteer.

Vicky Milbrandt, Colbert, has earned an award for logging 5,000 hours in the American Quarter Horse Association Horseback Riding Program. The program provides members recognition for time spent riding or driving American quarter horses.

Speech students from Spokane Falls Community College competed in the Mahaffey Memorial Forensics Tournament in McMinnville, Ore.

SFCC students who received awards were Nick Maier and Ian Hardie, finalists in the open duo interpretation; and Wendy Kuykendall, second place, junior programmed oral interpretation.

Amanda Koedding was a finalist in junior persuasion; Tamy Call, finalist, novice persuasion; Jeremy Lindholm, finalist, novice informative speaking and extemporaneous speaking; Kristina Dauterman, finalist, junior impromptu speaking; and Justin Baldwin-Bonny, third place, junior dramatic interpretation.

During parliamentary debate competition, Willow Moline and Ian Hardie advanced to the open octofinals, and Justin Baldwin-Bonny and Shawn Biggs advanced to the novice semifinals.

Air National Guard Technical Sgt. Catherine E. Dykman recently graduated from the financial management apprentice course in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Dykman, assigned to Fairchild Air Force Base. is the daughter of Bruce and Patricia Johnson, Spokane. She is a 1976 graduate of Marycliff High School.

The following teachers achieved certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The program was facilitated from the University of Idaho and Lewis-Clark State College.

Craig Hill of Pullman, who teaches at Moscow (Idaho) High School, and Tammy Sewell of Pullman, who teaches at West Park Elementary in Moscow.

Anna Schmidt, Spokane, will serve as a environment volunteer with the Peace Corps in Guatemala.

Schmidt graduated from Washington State University in 1997 with a bachelor of science degree in natural resource sciences. Her work will train teachers and educate people about conservation issues near biopshere reserves.

Previously, Anna worked for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife in Spokane.
