Scotties Keep Up The Pace, Wrap Up Spot In Regionals

Freeman had 20 reasons to be happy after Saturday night, but the 20th stood out the most.

Jeff Hyndman scored 18 points to lead Freeman to its 20th consecutive win, a 54-41 win over Liberty in the District 7 1A basketball tournament at Mead High.

The win advanced the Scotties to the district championship round and gave them a berth to the regional tournament against Caribou Trail League teams. One more district win and Freeman will also qualify for a return to the state tournament.

Liberty’s Jake Holling scored 10 in the fourth quarter. Liberty plays Kettle Falls on Tuesday night in a winner-to-region, loser-out game.

Richy Bohren scored eight in the second quarter and Jon Payne added 10 points in the third quarter, helping the Bulldogs eliminate Colfax.

Wydell Duncan hit four consecutive free throws early in the fourth quarter for a 38-34 lead, and the Eagles held off the Nighthawks at Endicott to advance to the title game.

St. John-Endicott finished 27 of 37 from the line, with a 16-for-20 effort in the fourth quarter. SJE’s Neill Bafus had seven rebounds. T-O’s Sam Crossett had six rebounds and three blocks.

SJE will play top-seeded Garfield-Palouse (17-2) at 5:30 p.m. Monday for the 1-2 seeds to the District 9 B tournament. T-O will play Colton at 2:30 Monday for the 3-4 seeds.

Brandon Mcintosh scored all 15 of his points in the second half, including 10 in the fourth quarter, and the Wildcats eliminated the Tigercats while qualifying for their second district tournament in 16 years.

Brian Busch added 11 rebounds and four assists for Colton, which has only played at district in 1995 since 1984. Dustin Colter had eight rebounds for L-W, which had qualified for the last 10 districts.
