Stone’S Throws Spark Chewelah

Chewelah is a stone’s throw away from the Great Northern League title.

Make that two Stone throws. Kenny Stone hit two free throws during the final 35 seconds Saturday night to lift the first-place Cougars to a 62-59 road win over Lakeside at Nine Mile Falls.

Chewelah (9-1 GNL) hosts second-place Deer Park (8-2) on Tuesday night and completes its season against third-place Pullman (8-3).

Justin Shamion led Chewelah with 24 points. Lakeside’s Jordan Bjork totaled 24 points and nine rebounds.

Trent Bray and Patrick Baumgartner combined to make three free throws in the final minute, lifting the visiting Greyhounds over the Rams.

Riverside tied the game at 43 after trailing by five with 3 minutes left. The Rams also had two late 3-point attempts hit the rim. Riverside’s Kevin Hersom had eight rebounds.

Marc Mostek scored 15 of his 22 in the second half, finishing 9 of 10 from the line, and the visiting Indians hit two late free throws to edge the Bantams.

Clarkston’s Justin Fraser scored a career-high 26 points.

Colville, the No. 3 seed to the District 7 3A tournament, opens play Friday at Mt. Spokane High with a loser-out game against No. 2 Cheney (17-3).

Moscow had already clinched the No. 2 seed to region. Sandpoint is the No. 5. Coeur d’Alene (10-10) is the No. 3 seed, Post Falls (2-18) the No. 6. Both had completed their league seasons.
