Whits Stay Cool, Win In Overtime

Joe Everson Correspondent

Men’s basketball

With 37 seconds to play in overtime at Whitworth College Saturday night, University of Puget Sound coach Joe Callero was reminded that basketball is not a democracy.

With his Loggers trailing Whitworth 75-74, Callero came unglued when Ryan Boyle was whistled for a foul in the Pirates backcourt, and the UPS coach was nailed for a technical before he was restrained by his assistants.

That little exercise in peaceful protest helped push Whitworth to an 84-77 Northwest Conference victory over UPS, the Pirates’ second heart-stopper of the weekend as they improved to 6-8 in league, 11-11 overall.

Whitworth made all four free throws in that critical sequence, two by Nathan Gazdik and two by David Rusk. Those two each added another pair in the last 31 seconds as the Pirates scored their last 10 points from the foul line.

After leading for almost 38 minutes in regulation, UPS had to rely on Spokane’s Craig Henneberry (Ferris) for a pair of clutch free throws with 17 seconds left to tie the score at 70 and send the contest into overtime.

The Loggers had scored 19 points in the first 4:30 of the game and held a 21-5 lead soon after. With several players in foul trouble, it was an uphill battle for Whitworth until the Bucs captured their first lead, 70-68, on Ryan Nelson’s drive with 26 seconds left.

But Nelson, who scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half, fouled out next trip down the court, setting up Henneberry’s heroics.

Whitworth coach Warren Friedrichs wasn’t excited about the manner in which things ended, but after the way they started, he wasn’t giving this one back.

“That start was horrible,” he said. “All I remember is that they scored 19 real fast. Henneberry and (Jeff) Carlson were 9-for-9 in the first half, and we really got hurt on the boards.

“What made a huge difference for us, though, was getting back into it by halftime (the Bucs were down 42-38),” he continued. “That meant we could control the outcome with 20 minutes of hard work.”

The Pirate bench was another big factor - Whitworth’s reserves outscored the UPS bench 21-3, with Rusk scoring 16.

Henneberry led the Loggers with 19 points, Carlson added 17, and lightningquick guard Brason Alexander, from Post Falls, scored 15.
