Mount Etna Puts On Spectacular Show
Mount Etna is putting on its latest spectacular show, but the fiery volcano’s eruption is posing no danger to tourists and natives on its slopes, experts said Sunday.
Etna roars to life every few months. Its last major eruption was in 1992.
“It’s really spectacular,” said Luciano Scarfi, one of 40 experts on a monitoring team near the crater. “No town or people are in danger,” Scarfi said in a telephone interview.
Skiers on Etna’s slopes this winter have been able to enjoy the show of orange-yellow bursts of flame. Many rural villages dot the mountain’s slopes on the side away from the hot lava flow.
The last time the volcano was so active was in September.
