Czechs Win, U.S. Loses
The Czech Republic defeated defending champion Russia on penalty shots in the final of the World Ice Hockey Junior Championships. The game ended 0-0 with the teams getting few scoring chances and only two penalties through regulation time and overtime.
Czech goalie Zdenek Smid became the hero of the day after saving the fourth penalty shot by the Russians, setting the official result at 1-0.
Team USA lost its second game in two days in a penalty shootout with Canada for third place. The regulation game ended 3-3 after the U.S. blew a 2-0 lead.
