Lakeside gymnast Katie Dinsmore was going to be happy Thursday night no matter how she placed in the all-around competition.

The Class 2A Eagles hosted their first Greater Spokane League meet and that in itself was cause for joy.

But it was fitting that Dinsmore tied for first place in the all-around competition in the five-team meet before an almost full house at Lakeside High School.

“What happens, happens,” Dinsmore said before she’d heard the scores. “I was just glad we went out and had a home meet today. That was probably our No. 1 goal, to have a home meet.”

Dinsmore, a sophomore, won the floor exercise and vault and scored 36.6 points to tie Central Valley sophomore April Mims. CV’s Emily Roberts scored a 35.45 for third.

CV (10-0) won the team competition over defending league champion Ferris (8-2) with a season-best score of 172.35. The Bears travel to Port Angeles for a four-team meet tonight featuring defending State 4A champion Sehome of Bellingham. They will compete in the Port Angeles Invitational on Saturday.

Bears coach Kim Brunelle said her goal was to see her team score a 172 Thursday.

“My whole philosophy is to progress and build, to get better every week,” Brunelle said. “To have no bad weeks, so once we get to district and regionals, the most important time of the season, we’re peaking at the right time.”

Mims’ beam routine seems to be near top form already.

Mims scored a career-best 9.5 in her final event of the night and also won the uneven bars. She said she will be confident going up against Sehome tonight.

“Now that I know I can do that, I know I can do it again,” she said.

Host Lakeside (6-2) finished third in the team scoring with a 165.5. Second-place Ferris had 166.05. Lewis and Clark (2-6) and Rogers (0-8) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Dinsmore said competing against a team like CV is good preparation for the State 3A/2A meet. The Eagles have a separate postseason.

“We will see people as good as them at state,” she said. “It’s a good eye-opener for the skills we need to work on.”

First-year Eagles coach Alecia Sing agreed. Sing enjoyed organizing a home meet that included the league’s top teams.

“For our sports out here in a small community, it was really fun,” she said.

A bright spot for LC was the thirdplace finishes by freshman Kolbie Pearsall on beam and vault.

In another GSL meet Thursday, senior Amber Baines won the allaround and two events to lead North Central to a meet-best 160.3 points during a five-way meet at University.

Baines won the bars and vault on her way to 34.3 points. All-around runner-up Marci Hulbert (33.5) of U-Hi won the floor and teammate Maggie Herda won the beam.
