Sweden’s Thomas Enqvist eliminated Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean 7-6 (7-1), 7-5, while Sweden’s Magnus Norman overcame Spaniard Alberto Martin 6-4, 6-3 to advance to a AAPT tennis championship semifinal showdown in Adelaide, Australia.

Also, Frenchman Nicolas Escude upset second-seeded Briton Tim Henman 6-3, 6-1. Escude will meet fourth-seeded Lleyton Hewitt of Australia, who beat countryman Jason Stoltenberg 6-2, 6-2.

In the American’s first game since their World Cup stars began a boycott over wages, the U.S. routed the Czech Republic 8-1 in the opener of the four-nation Australia Cup women’s soccer tournament in Melbourne, Australia.

The Seattle University Chieftains are now the Redhawks. University officials said the Chieftain mascot was intended to honor Indians, but tribal leaders responding to a school inquiry last year said it was offensive.

Seattle’s WNBA expansion team will be called the Storm. The team’s new logo will be unveiled at a Jan. 19 ceremony in the KeyArena.
