Cheney Rallies, Wins

Matters looked encouraging for Post Falls and bleak for Cheney after one quarter Tuesday night.

Looks were deceiving.

Lani McLauchlin’s layin and Julie Marsh’s two free throws, both in the final minute, allowed Cheney to post an improbable 28-24 Border League win over the visiting Trojans.

Desiree Johnson scored nine points in the first quarter to stake Post Falls to an 18-2 lead. The Trojans were limited to six more points, as they misfired on 29 of 31 field-goal attempts.

Jaden Callahan had seven rebounds and Brittney Van Matre four steals for Cheney. PF played without injured point guard Carmi Eberle (ankle).

Christen Smith hit four 3 pointers and scored a season-high 19 to lead the Nighthawks over the Tigercats at Tekoa.

T-O opened the game with a 7-0 burst and never faltered. The win moved the Nighthawks into a first-place tie with idle Garfield-Palouse.

Betsy Smart added eight assists and 7-for-8 shooting from the line for T-O, and Katie Driscoll had eight rebounds.
