Cardinals Continue To Misfire

North Idaho College women’s basketball coach Greg Crimp probably thought he had seen the worst of things in Thursday’s loss to Snow College.

His team shot 25 percent from the field in that contest.

But things didn’t get a lot better - 29 percent - in NIC’s 48-45 Scenic West Athletic Conference setback to Dixie College on Saturday night at Christianson Gym.

“We’re just not finding a way to score,” Crimp said. “We’re not running the floor much and we’re late getting into our offense, so we end up with the shot clock winding down a lot.”

NIC (12-6 overall, 3-4 SWAC) led 45-37 with 7:33 remaining, but the Cardinals failed to produce the knockout blow. In fact, they whiffed.

The Cardinals went scoreless the rest of the way and managed only 15 points in the second half. NIC made just 3 of 20 3-pointers - 1 of 13 in the second half. The Cards were 6 of 26 from the field in the second half, an icy 23 percent.

Despite those lowly numbers, the Cardinals were in control until the waning moments, thanks to a solid defensive effort. NIC shut down Dixie’s leading scorer, Caroline Heaton, who scored just six points. Dixie (12-6, 3-4) shot just 34 percent from the field.

Guard Candace Baldwin scored six of Dixie’s final 11 points. She was the only Rebel in double figures with 12 points. While Heaton struggled offensively, she did contribute 14 rebounds.

Sophomore Kammi Cottrell led NIC with 11 points, nine in the first half. Freshman Amy Lewis added 10 points and sophomore Anna Getz had seven points and nine rebounds.

NIC faces College of Southern Idaho Friday in Twin Falls.

The Pirates kept pace with first-place Linfield for most of the first half, but a 31-4 run by the Wildcats that began in the closing minute of the half was too much to overcome.

Whitworth (8-5, 2-2) enjoyed a 38-30 lead with 25 seconds left in the first half, but from then on, it was all Linfield. The Wildcats (9-4, 4-0) opened the second half by scoring several uncontested layups and built a 61-42 lead with 11:03 left to play. Linfield senior center Sarah Jensen finished with a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds.

Whitworth’s only points during Linfield’s 9-1/2-minute layup clinic were one field goal each by Star Olson and reserve post Jennifer Bennett.

To make matters even more challenging, Whitworth’s top scorer, Jamie Wakefield, picked up her fourth foul with 15:56 left and sat for several minutes. The junior from Mead High led the Bucs with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Starting point guard Emily Stuenkel saw limited playing time because of the flu.
