Benewah County St. Maries
Greg Wolfe, a 1989 St. Maries High School graduate, is the first student to graduate from the distance learning program offered by Aims Community College in Greeley, Colo. Wolfe was formerly a sergeant in the U.S. Army at Fort Hood, Texas, and maintained medical equipment for his battalion. He studied for a year to acquire his associate’s degree. Wolfe is the son of Butch Wolfe, St. Maries, and Janet Voss, Harrison.
Bonner County Sandpoint
A proposal to build a community sewage lagoon and land application system to serve up to 30 homes goes before the Bonner County commissioners on Jan. 20. Jeff Pfaeffle and Paul Trunell want to develop their property in the Oden Bay/Sunnyside neighborhood, but cannot install septic systems because of the soil conditions. Their community sewer system would allow other property owners to build homes in the area as well, but many neighbors are opposed. The meeting is planned for 6 p.m. at the Bonner County courthouse.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
The Boundary County Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on an application for an amendment to the zoning map by Frontier Trading Co. on a 20.5-acre parcel south of Eastport on U.S. Highway 95. The property is currently zoned agriculture/forestry and the applicants are seeking to change the designation to rural community/commercial to allow expansion of an existing business. Residents may send comments to the commission until the date of the hearing to Boundary County Planning and Zoning Department, P.O. Box 419, Bonners Ferry, ID, 83805. The hearing will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the main courtroom of the Boundary County courthouse.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
The Children’s Village recently received a $12,860 grant from Rosie O’Donnell’s For All Kids Foundation, which awards grants to nonprofit organizations that support children with child care, medical, educational and housing programs. The village will use the money for its crisis nursery, which is for children under 5 years old whose families are in distress.
Latah County Moscow
Police Chief Dan Weaver wants residents to be aware of an alleged pyramid scheme in the city. The person-to-person chain letter asks for a donation and states those who participate could make $14,000 to $16,000. Anyone who has been approached should contact the Moscow Police Department at (208) 882-2677.
Shoshone County Kellogg
The Kellogg School District board approved the hiring of Jill Lilienkamp as the Chapter I teacher, slated to begin Jan. 24. The position is funded through federal money and no district funds were used.
WASHINGTON
Pend Oreille County Newport
People are asked to send cards, letters, prayers and donations to a fund for Janice Linton. The local woman is undergoing treatment for flesh-eating disease at Harborview Medical Center. Diagnosed in December with invasive group A streptococcal disease, Linton was taken immediately to Seattle for treatment. The disease is contagious. A fund to pay mounting medical bills is open at Pend Oreille Bank.
Spokane County Spokane
Mark Reilly was recently hired as the interim director of the Peaceful Valley Community Center. He replaces Kathleen Stevens, who resigned.
Whitman County Pullman
Holland Library’s Manuscripts, Archives and Special Collections is featuring the exhibit “Urban Spaces, Urban Places: The Architectural Visions of Kenneth W. Brooks” through March 31. Brooks was an award-winning urban designer, architect and city planner in Spokane. The collection contains graphic, printed and manuscript material from 1947-1990. A public presentation on the exhibit will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Holland Library user education classroom, with a reception to follow.
MONTANA
Lincoln County Libby
This year’s 12-member Libby High School cheerleading squad won the only at-large bid at the UCA regional competition Dec. 4 in Spokane. Winning the spot at regional competition qualified them for national competition. That and having male cheerleaders on the squad are firsts in the history of the school. The squad will continue its competition Feb. 4-8 in Orlando, Fla. Fund-raising events to sponsor the squad have been successful, said coach Tracy Scussel.
