Ducks Push Cougs Into Rare Depths

Pac-10 women’s basketball

For the second consecutive game, Washington State fell victim to a fast second-half start by its opponent as the Cougars fell to Oregon 77-65 in Pacific-10 Conference action Saturday night in Eugene, Ore.

WSU (3-13, 0-6 Pac-10) shot 54 percent in the first half and built a 33-28 lead at intermission. It was the first halftime lead for the Cougars since Dec. 20, when they defeated Bowling Green. That was their last victory and they have lost eight games since.

The 0-6 start in conference play is Washington State’s worst since the Cougars dropped their first nine conference games in the 1986-87 season, the inaugural year for Pac-10 women’s play. The eight-game skid overall is the longest since 1993-94, when the Cougars lost 11 straight, including a forfeit loss at Arizona State.

Oregon (13-4, 4-1 Pac-10) erased its five-point halftime deficit with a 19-3 run to take a commanding 47-36 lead with 13:37 to play.

The win was the 19th consecutive home victory for Oregon, marking the sixth-longest active streak in the country. It came before 5,367 fans at McArthur Court.

The Cougars will return home for a 7 p.m. contest against California on Thursday.
