Public Can Comment On Trail Until Feb. 19

From Staff

The public has until Feb. 19 to comment on an agreement that would result in creation of a recreational trail between Plummer and Mullan.

The agreement, called a consent decree, was reached between the U.S. government, Coeur d’Alene Tribe, state of Idaho and Union Pacific Railroad. It details how the railroad company will clean up and/ or pave the 72-mile Wallace Branch right-of-way, which it is seeking to abandon.

The route, used by trains that served the Silver Valley mining district, is polluted with lead and other metals.

Copies of the consent decree are available in Coeur d’Alene at the North Idaho College Library and the Environmental Protection Agency field office, 1910 Northwest Blvd., Suite 208. Copies are also available at Harrison City Hall, Mullan City Hall, the Plummer Public Library and the Wallace City Library.

Comments should be sent to the U.S. Department of Justice, Environmental Enforcement Section, Environment & Natural Resources Division, P.O. Box 7611, Washington, D.C. 20044. For further information, call (800) 424-4372.
