Shadow Take Fourth Straight

Mike Dorrington and Bret Houck scored goals in the second half to overcome a 1-0 deficit and lift the Spokane Shadow to a 2-1 USL Premier Development League win over the Seattle Sounders Select team on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

The win was the fourth straight for the Shadow (5-3-2), who moved into third place in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. Conversly, the Sounders (9-3) have dropped three straight after opening the season with nine straight wins. The Sounders remain in first place.

The Shadow play at Abbotsford, British Columbia today at 2 p.m. The 86ers (5-6-0), who lost to Yakima 4-1 Saturday, are in fourth place in the Northwest Division.

Joe Watson opened the scoring off an assist from Robbie Shaper 27 minutes into the first half. Dorrington opened the scoring in the second half with an assist from Zane Higgins 60 minutes in. Houck hit the game-winner at 81 minutes on an assist from Abbas Faridnia.

Volleyball

The Spokane Splash U18 and U17 volleyball teams completed play on Saturday at the National Junior Volleyball tournament at Sacramento, Calif., with top-20 finishes.

The U18 team finished 10th and the U17 team, playing in the same bracket, took 19th place. It was the second-highest finish in the bracket among U17 teams. There were 264 teams in that bracket.

The U17 team consisted of Wendy Baker, Meagan Camp, Sarah Everstine, Lindsey Floch, Jill Paras, Keva Sonderen, Kristen Urdahl, Charise Weatherbee and Amy Oates.

In other brackets, the Spokane Splash U16 Black team finished 25th in U16 and the White team finished 73rd. Spokane’s U14 team finished 19th in the U14 bracket.

Legion baseball

Jason Wederspahn hit a pair of two-run doubles to lead the Spokane Blue Devils to an 8-0 American Legion Fourth of July Tournament win over the Rathdrum Prairie Cardinals on Saturday at Gonzaga University.

The Cardinals won their first game of the day, a 3-2 decision over the Black Hills Bandits from Olympia. Later at Whitworth College field, the Bandits beat El Segundo (Calif.) 5-1.

In action at Al K. Jackson field, the Great Falls Stallions slipped past the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 4-2.

Great Falls pitcher Jeff Bates threw a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Blake Whiteman went 2 for 3 at the plate for the Lumbermen.

The Stallions also won the final game of the Saturday’s tournament schedule, a 3-2 decision over Rogers Beavers of Sumner.

Zack Danelson knocked in the winning run in the seventh inning with a double.
