Police Find Bombs, Arrest Two Men
Two men carrying five devices that appeared to be pipe bombs were arrested Monday night by Kootenai County sheriff’s deputies.
Police stopped a black pickup truck with Washington plates on Rockford Bay Road at Hamaker Road at about 7:40 p.m.
A deputy arrested the driver, Jason J. Hauff, on drunken-driving charges. Hauff, 22, is based in California with the U.S. Navy.
The deputy walked back to the pickup and found the pipe bombs, police said. Passenger Christopher M. Brown, 23, of Vista, Calif., also was arrested.
Deputies notified the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and called in the Spokane bomb squad to dispose of the devices.
It’s not unusual for the sheriff’s department to call the bomb squad, Kootenai County sheriff’s Sgt. Ward Crawford said.
Brown was released from the Kootenai County Jail after posting a $160 bail. Hauff remained in jail.
