All-Star Game Will Pit Area’S Soccer Grads

The top graduated senior girls from North Idaho will play the top Spokane-area graduates in the 2000 Inland Empire East vs. West Girls High School All-Star soccer game at 3 p.m. Saturday at Albi Stadium.

The match will be followed by the Spokane Shadow against the Willamette Valley Firebirds in a Premier Development League Northwest Division match at 7:05.

Confirmed players for the East team in the all-star game are Chase Sbicca, Kaitlin Mitchell, Katie Quinn and Nicki Lyon, Lake City; Casey Joyner, Tiffany Beck and Janee Andre, Coeur d’Alene; Jesy Rosholt, Sandpoint; and Cami Eberle, Post Falls.

The East team is coached by Greg Hilmes of Lewiston.

The West players are Elina Gee and Cassie Kitchen, Mt. Spokane; Shannon Driscoll and Kate Parks, Ferris; Janine McNally, Lewis and Clark; Ashli Anderson and Laura McKinley, Mead; Jenn Weber, North Central; Holly Rushing, Rogers; Rachel Jones and Stephanie Reynolds, Shadle Park; Jessica Bowen, East Valley; Rebecca Kochendorfer, Central Valley; Larissa Mueller, Riverside and Heather Sale, University.

The West team is coached by Travis Hanson of Mead.

Soccer

Spokane Shadow defender Brett Houck was named to the Premier Development League’s team of the week for his goal in the 81st minute of Spokane’s 2-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders Select on Saturday.

Fishing

The season for hatchery chinook salmon on the South Fork of the Salmon River will close at 9 tonight, July 5. Idaho Department of Fish and Game director Rod Sando signed the South Fork closure notice today after fisheries staff advised him that the quota for incidental catch of listed chinook salmon had been reached. Seasons on spring chinook have already closed in the Little Salmon, North Fork and mainstem Clearwater rivers.

Seasons remain open on the Lochsa and South Fork of the Clearwater rivers. Seasons for salmon are based on quotas, as well as time span. As the adult fish cross dams on their upstream spawning migration, biologists count them and estimate how many are hatchery fish and how many are natural fish. The sport fishery is directed at surplus hatchery fish. However, in areas like the South Fork, there are naturally-produced fish which also are caught and released by anglers. These fish are listed under the Endangered Species Act.

The number of listed chinook that sport anglers may catch and release is limited by a quota to protect listed fish that are destined to spawn in streams. When the quota of listed chinook adults is reached, the sport season is closed. Although the overall run size is large, the percentage of listed fish has declined from what was expected, resulting in the closure. A similar “listed fish quota” closure occurred on the South Fork in 1997.

Golf

Spokane’s Reid Hatley shot an even-par 72 and is tied for fifth place after the first round of the Sahalee Players Championship at Sahalee Country Club in Redmond, Wash.

Hatley shot a 34 on the back nine. Ryan Lavoie of Pasco is the leader, with a 69.

American Legion baseball

Jeremy Smith pitched a six-inning four-hitter and the Northstars (7-4) moved into second place in the Senior division by defeating the Bandits 11-1 at Jackson Field. Kurt Hibbard doubled twice for the winners, who moved percentage points ahead of the idle Cannons (8-5) in the standings. The first-place Northwest Athletics Blue Devils are 7-3.

Fourteen area players are on the rosters for Saturday’s all-star games at Yakima’s Sundome.

The format divides the state’s five classifications into “City” and “State” teams. All selected players were seniors during the 1999-2000 school year.

Scheduled to play from the Spokane area are Greg Johnson and Chris Bond, Gonzaga Prep; Kyle Boast, Central Valley; Demetrius Scott, Shadle Park; John Focht, West Valley; Bill DePell, Freeman; Jared Evans and Eric Smith, Valley Christian; Karl Scheuerman and Josh Hames, St. John-Endicott; Jeremy Kimble, Garfield-Palouse; Jeremy Groth, Curlew; Gabe Goldman, Northwest Christian; and Brian Busch, Colton.

Game times are: Class B, 1 p.m.; Class 1A, 2:30; Class 2A, 4; Class 3A; 5:30; and Class 4A, 7.
