Obituaries

Earl Krupke Spokane

Visitation for Earl W. Krupke, 91, will be from, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport, Wash. Service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Reardan (Wash.) Cemetery.

Mr. Krupke, who was born at Denney Station near Reardan, died Tuesday.

He graduated in 1928 from Reardan High School and was a farmer in Mondovi near Reardan for more than 60 years.

He was a 21-year Spokane resident.

Mr. Krupke was a lifetime member of Reardan United Methodist Church, and was a member of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers, Spring Creek Grange and the Lions Club.

He helped build Reardan Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Newman Lake Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Murtis; a son, Leslie Krupke of Richland; a daughter, Cheryl Liljenberg of Spokane; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Stephen Larson Veradale

Memorial service for Stephen Craig Larson, 53, will be at 4 p.m. today at Spokane Christian Center. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Larson, who was born in Wallace, died Sunday.

He graduated from Wallace High School. He served in the Army for two years and then in the Navy for four years.

Mr. Larson was self-employed in the industrial washing service business.

He was active in the Spokane Christian Center and was assistant chaplain at St. Luke’s Extended Care Center. He also was a member of the American Family Association.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Darlene; two daughters, Alicia and Rachelle, and a son, Brad, all at home.

Katherine Miller Fones Salem, Ore.

Private memorial service for Katherine “Kay” Miller Fones, 87, will be held at a later date in Coeur d’Alene. Crown Cremation and Funeral Service in Milwaukie, Ore., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Fones, who was born in Portland, died Saturday.

She married W.F. Miller in 1935, and they moved to Spokane in 1946. She worked for Edmunson’s Dry Goods in Opportunity.

Her husband died in 1972.

In 1978 she married Raymond Fones.

Mrs. Fones was active in the Spokane Valley Senior Center and was a 50-year member of Spokane Valley Episcopal Church.

She moved to Salem in 1998.

Her husband died in 1998.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy Miller of Salem; a son, Steven Miller of Coupeville, Wash.; three grandsons and two great-grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Spokane Valley Senior Center or Hospice of Spokane.

Margaret French Spokane

Memorial service for Margaret “Maggie” French, 65, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. French, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Tuesday.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and later attended the University of Idaho. She graduated from the University of Montana with a bachelor’s degree in education.

Mrs. French taught at Whitman, Grant, Bemis and Mullan Road elementary schools. She retired in 1995.

She was a lifetime member of St. John’s Cathedral, which she served as secretary for a few years. She also was a member of the Bishop’s Guild and was the enrichment coordinator during the Cathedral’s 50th anniversary celebration. She was a volunteer in the student reading program at Jefferson Elementary.

Survivors include her husband, Robert; a son, Steve French of Moscow, Idaho; a sister, Mary Drummond of Hayden Lake, Idaho; and one granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or St. John’s Cathedral.

Gerda Larson Fairfield

Graveside service for Gerda Larson, 94, will be at 11 a.m. today at Fairview Cemetery in Rockford. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Fairfield is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Larson, who was born in Sherwood, N.D., died Sunday.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Rockford Women’s Club and the McIntosh Grange.

Her husband, Ward, died in 1966.

Survivors include two sons, Edward Larson of Rockford and Raymond Larson of South Carolina; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Beverly Freeman Spokane

Memorial service for Beverly Ann Freeman, 62, will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home.

Miss Freeman, who was born in Endicott, N.Y., died Monday. She was a 27-year Spokane resident.

She had worked at The Bon Marche, United Paint and Hewlett-Packard. She retired from Hewlett-Packard in 1999, and operated The Stitchin’ Post with her daughter, Wanda.

Miss Freeman was a member of the Washington State and Pacific Northwest Quilters and the Spokane Valley Quilters Guild Association.

Survivors include her companion, Allen Ludvik; her mother, Anna Ammerman of Spokane; a son, Kris Provo of San Diego; three daughters, Kitty Johnson, Gwen Dahlstrom and Wanda Jeffries, all of Spokane; two brothers, David Freeman and Dale Ammerman; a sister, Laura Vogler; and six grandchildren.

Cleo Cline Spokane

Graveside service for Cleo M. Cline, 76, will be at 3 p.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cline, who was born in Worden, Mont., died Sunday.

She had worked at the shipyards in Pasco and Longview, Wash., during World War II and was a member of the Women’s Naval Corps.

She was a 42-year Spokane resident and was a salesperson for The Cresent department store.

Her husband of 43 years, Edward, preceded her in death.

Survivors include three daughters, Diana Passmore and Kathy Anderson, both of Spokane, and Julie Titus of Ellensburg; two sons, Mark and Colin Cline, both of Spokane; a brother, Gene Cobell of Browning, Mont.; eight grandsons and four great-grandsons.

Ann `Mary Jo’ Doherty Spokane

Vigil service for Ann M. “Mary Jo” Doherty, principal of St. Thomas More School, was Wednesday at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church. Funeral Mass was Thursday at the church. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Ms. Doherty, who was born in Parsons, Kansas, died Sunday. She was 60.

She graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in Pendleton, Ore., and entered religious life as a Sister of St. Francis of Philadelphia.

Ms. Doherty left the religious community in 1978 and had been the principal of St. Thomas More School since 1979.

She served on the Washington State Catholic Conference Board, Religion XII National Catholic Educational Association and on the board of trustees at Gonzaga University. She served on the Washington State Private School Advisory Board and was co-chairman of the Jubilee 2000 committee.

Ms. Doherty received the award of Region XII Distinguished Principal for 1991 and 1992, and also received the Distinguished Principal Award in 1992 from the National Catholic Education Association. She served as a member of the Washington State Catholic Conference for six years ending her term in 1999.

Survivors include her mother, Mabel Doherty; and three sisters, Regina Russell, Carolyn Thompson and Rita Blade.

Vera Boston Creston, Wash.

Private burial for Vera M. Boston, 63, will be held at Creston Cemetery. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Boston, who was born in Nucla, Colo., died Monday.

She married Arthur Boston in 1952 and graduated from Columbia High School near Richland, in 1954.

Mrs. Boston was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Christa Distefano and Cindy McInernev, both of Spokane; two sisters, Frances Archer of Colorado and Hazel Middle of Newport, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Creston Girl Scouts or the Creston Ambulance Fund.

Richard Young Margaret Young Washington, Utah

Visitation for Richard Louis Young, 71, and Margaret Mary (Pique) Young, 70, will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today, and 10 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Spilsbury and Beard Mortuary in St. George, Utah. Service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Washington Stake Center in Washington, Utah. Memorial service will also be held at 11 a.m. July 15 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Vashon Island, Wash.

Mr. Young, who was born in Rathdrum, Idaho, died Sunday in an automobile accident near Idaho Falls. His wife, Margaret, also died Sunday, from injuries suffered in the accident. She was born in New Orleans.

Mr. Young, a former Spokane resident, served in the Army from 1951 to 1953 and was stationed in Germany. He graduated from Gonzaga University with a degree in photo science and later from Rochester (N.Y.) Institute Technology.

He had two children with his first wife, Janet Dunleavy Young.

He moved to Seattle in 1965 and started Image Control Systems, a graphic arts supply company. There are three other branches of Image controls Systems, including one in Spokane. In 1980 he founded Morningside Morgan Farms on Vashon Island. His wife was co-owner in these businesses.

Mrs. Young graduated from Merillac College in St. Louis and received a master’s degree in education and sociology from St. Mary’s Dominican College in New Orleans. She taught in New Orleans, Natchez, Miss., and Milwaukee from 1948 to 1970.

Mr. and Mrs. Young were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints since 1989 . They moved to Washington, Utah in 1992.

Mr. Young is survived by a daughter, Joanne; a son, Brian; two brothers, John and Gene Young; and two granddaughters.

Mrs. Young is survived by two brothers, August Pique Sr. of Biloxi, Miss., and Charles Pique of Long Beach, Miss.

Richard Parker Coeur d’Alene

A celebration of life for Richard D. “Rick” Parker, 29, will be Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at the family home, 4106 Nez Perce Road, Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Parker, who was born in Moscow, Idaho, drowned Sunday in the Spokane River at Corbin Park in Post Falls.

He grew up in Avery, Idaho, and had worked as a driller for Spooner Drilling.

Mr. Parker began working as a framer in the construction industry in 1989 and had worked for Cal McCullough for many years, and was recently self-employed.

He also was a mechanic and helped others with home-improvement projects.

Survivors include two children, Dylan and Colleen Parker, both of Coeur d’Alene; his parents, Richard and Joy Parker of Coeur d’Alene; two brothers, Dave Parker of Post Falls and Jamie Parker of Avery; two sisters, Cynthia Schildgen of Coeur d’Alene and Lynda Fahlgren of Worley, Idaho; and his grandmother, Olive Collins of Coeur d’Alene.

Arthur `Jim’ Stratton Spokane

Memorial service for Arthur James “Jim” Stratton, 67, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Eagles Lodge 2 in Spokane. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stratton, who was born in Spokane and raised in the Palouse, Wash., area, died Sunday. He was a 46-year Spokane resident.

He graduated from Palouse High School and received a bachelor’s degree in education from Eastern Washington State College. He later studied for his master’s degree at Whitworth College.

He was a teacher and coach for School District 81, teaching at several elementary schools. He retired in 1997 after 39 years.

He was a member of the Christian faith.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Charlotte; a son, Jim Stratton, and a daughter, Tina Stratton, both of Spokane; and three grandsons.

Larry Moe St. Maries

Memorial Mass for Larry D. Moe, 59, will be at 9 a.m. today at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in St. Maries. Memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at his shop on Butler Bay on state Highway 3 near St. Maries. YatesHodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spokane, Mr. Moe died Monday.

He grew up and attended school in St. Maries. He had worked as a logging contractor and also worked on various equipment in his shop.

Mr. Moe was a member of the St. Joe River Boat Club, St. Joe SnowRiders, Elks Lodge and Associated Logging Contractors.

He was active in snowmobiling, fishing, boating and skiing.

Survivors include his wife, Marcelle; a son, Chad Farrell of Pullman; three daughters, Lori Sievers of Plummer, Idaho, Dianna Smith of Spokane and Molly Farrell of San Diego; his mother, Hazel Moe of St. Maries; a brother, Terry Moe of St. Maries; two sisters, Joyce Yearout and Debbie Gregoire, both of St. Maries; and two grandchildren.

Ruth (Haynes) Kimble Pullman

Service for Ruth Virginia (Haynes) Kimble, 99, will be held at a later date. Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kimble, who was born in Clinton, Wash., died Saturday.

She and her husband, Glenn, farmed in the Fallon area and at Union Flat south of Pullman.

Mrs. Kimble was a 70-year member of the Washington State Grange.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include three sons, Melvin Kimble of Pullman, Donald Kimble of Tekoa, Wash., and Arnold Kimble of Clarkston, Wash.; a sister, Evelyn Schultz of Meridian, Idaho; nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Frank Scott Spokane

Service for Frank T. Scott, 82, is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Chewelah Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will be at Summit Valley Cemetery in Addy, Wash. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in San Diego, Mr. Scott died Monday.

He married LeVeta DeSpain in 1940 and served in the Army from 1944 to 1946.

He was a 41-year Spokane resident and was a feed-mill operator for 30 years.

He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Randy Scott of Spokane, Anthony Scott of Buckley, Wash., and Edwin Scott of Meridian, Idaho; four daughters, Kathleen Roesler of Chewelah, Wash., Christine Olson of Billings, Mont., Lindsy Scott of Portland and Lori Jolley of West Jordan, Utah; his twin sister, Ethel Rawlins of Manti, Utah; a sister, Georgia Hoopes of Brigham City, Utah; 33 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
