Mathison Lifts Cannons

Chad Mathison pitched a two-hitter, striking out six, to lead the Cannons (9-8) to a 3-0 win over the Northwest Athletics Blue Devils in Senior play at Jackson Field.

Jeremy Nichols singled and doubled for the winners. The Blue Devils (7-4) fell 1-1/2 games behind the first-place Northstars.

Shea Lanphere went 4 for 4 with two triples and eight RBIs as the Spokane Heat under-18 team defeated Tacoma 15-5 in a game at Spokane Falls Community College.

The U-10 Club Spokane Cougars finished third in the National Amateur Baseball Federation World Series in Nashville, Tenn. after losing their final game Sunday 10-3 to Funacho Flames of Cincinnati.

The Cougars won three of four games to reach the 8-team, single elimination championship portion of the tournament.

Spokane defeated a team from Thornton, Md. 26-5 in the first round of championship play Saturday.

For the tournament, Jarek Cunningham hit .650 with two homers and McKenzie Murphy hit .550.
