Connection: Wait And See
Washington and Idaho residents will have to wait to find out who wants to operate low-power radio stations in this area.
Applications for Idaho stations won’t be taken until November, and the Washington application period will be next May.
The strongest interest in low-power radio in this region has been in the isolated city of Republic, in mountainous Ferry County.
Volunteers there formed a nonprofit organization to operate an unlicensed station called Republic Community Radio. The station broadcast community news, sports, music and advertisements for two years before shutting down in October 1998 under pressure from the Federal Communications Commission.
