Blue Devils, Heat Wrap ‘Em Up

The Pullman Patriots and Northwest Ath- letics Blue Devils split an American Legion doubleheader Sunday at A.K. Jackson Field.

The one win was enough to give the Blue Devils the league championship.

Northwest Athletics won the opener 3-2 when Spencer Bishop scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jerin Harper had two hits, including a solo home run for the Blue Devils.

Pullman won the second game 12-2 as Jason Fox had four hits and three RBIs and Jordan Maj had two hits and two RBIs. Maj pitched a two-hitter for the victory.

Playoffs begin Tuesday, with No. 4 Pullman vs. No. 3 Cannons at Gonzaga University, and No. 2 Northstars vs. No. 5 Silver Lanes Bandits in a doubleheader at Jackson Field. No. 1 Blue Devils have a bye until the championship series.

The Spokane Heat 18-and-under team won the Kennewick Duster Bowl tournament, defeating Vancouver Red Lions 3-2.

Dan Stucky went 2 for 2 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored for the Heat. Nick Scott stole home for the third and eventual game-winning run to cap a 3-run fifth-inning rally for the Heat (29-12), which had trailed 2-0 since the top of the first inning.

The Heat’s Alexis Alexander was named MVP of the eight-team tournament.

Golf

The ninth event of the 2000 PGA Junior Series will be today through Wednesday at Manito Golf and Country Club. The event has attracted players from 16 states and Europe.

The PGA Junior Series is the PGA of America’s summer tournament program for boys and girls 13-17.

Auto racing

Alan Quist of Spokane passed Blaine Sneva on lap 67 and led the rest of the way to win the Gary Miller Memorial 100 Northwest Modified Series race Saturday at Stateline Speedway.

Quist, who secured his second career series victory, started his night off by qualifying on the pole for the race that honored the memory of Miller, a founding member of the series who passed away two years ago. Josh Roberts of Ephrata was second and Rathdrum’s Jeff Braton third.

Pat Lewis lead from lap eight in the 25 lap Sportsman main and went on to win his sixth race of the year. A caution flag on lap seven when Tony Holcomb hit the back stretch wall, bunched the field together and allowed Lewis to squeeze past Dave Anderson for a lead he would not give up.

Dan Morneau of Victoria, British Columbia, took the 25 lap main in the touring Canadian Oldtimers. Spark Strong of Eastport, Idaho, was third and Pete Munk fourth. Steve Spalding (6th) and Frankie Volz Sr. (7th) were other local finishers in the top 10.

Mark DeBoodt won his fifth Mini-Truck race of the season.
