Kaiser Negotiations Recess

Contract negotiations between Kaiser Aluminum and the United Steelworkers recessed Friday and are scheduled to resume Monday in Las Vegas.

The parties met all week in Pittsburgh, but declined to discuss progress of the negotiations..

The two parties are working on a mutually agreed timeline to end the 22-month labor dispute that has kept 2,100 Spokane Steelworkers out of their jobs since Sept. 30, 1998.

The union and the company have said they will bargain until Aug. 2. Unresolved issues would then go to binding arbitration with a five-member panel scheduled to meet in late August.

Under that timetable, the Steelworkers would return to work at the five affected plants no later than the end of September.
