Police Technician Testifies

The prosecution in the Ray Lewis murder trial in Atlanta explored the “blood trail” it says will connect the Baltimore Ravens linebacker to a Jan. 31 brawl that left two men dead.

Shirley McMillan-Horton, a crime scene technician for the Atlanta Police Department, testified that she collected swabs from several blood stains in the stretch limousine rented by Lewis. Though she did not identify whose blood was found, McMillan-Horton said she found dried blood in Lewis’ limousine, on a towel found near the vehicle, and in the men’s bathroom at a hotel where the limousine was parked.

Former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly sustained minor cuts and scrapes when a two-seat plane he was in crashed into the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska during a hunting trip May 20.

Both Kelly and the pilot made their way safely to shore. The plane had gone a couple of hundred feet into the air when it ran into problems, Kelly said. The pilot tried to skip the plane along the water only to have it go in nose first about 100 yards from shore.

San Francisco 49ers coach Steve Mariucci said quarterback Steve Young has passed a battery of clinical tests indicating he’s back to normal.

San Francisco had hoped to have a retirement decision from Young, 38, by Saturday, when the team was due to pay him a $1 million bonus if he was still on the active roster. But Young met with Mariucci on Tuesday night and said he needed more time. The 49ers agreed to the delay after Young signed a waiver delaying payment of his bonus until June 10.

Lawrence Phillips, whose NFL career foundered amid repeated disciplinary problems and violent behavior, remains in the Beverly Hills, Calif., jail on charges of assaulting his girlfriend.

Phillips was arrested Saturday on a felony assault charge and carrying a loaded weapon in a vehicle. He was in jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.
