Bulldogs, Huskies Advance

Gonzaga’s freshmen 4 and open 4 boats both placed third in semifinal heats during the International Rowing Association National Championships at Cooper River in Camden, N.J., on Friday.

Both GU boats will race in today’s Petite Finals, for places 7-14.

The Bulldogs’ varsity 4 boat placed second in its semifinal and will race against Western Washington today for 15th and 16th places.

Also at the event, all four boats from Washington won races to advance to today’s Grande Finals.

Washington will race in lane four during the Varsity Challenge Cup, the event’s elite race. Princeton, Dartmouth, Brown, Temple and California will attempt to keep the Huskies from their 12th overall title, and first since 1997.

Men’s golf

Doug and Dan Potter of Hayden Lake Country Club tied for fourth place at the Washington State Golf Association’s men’s best-ball championships at Eaglemont Golf Club in Mt. Vernon, Wash.

The Potters shot a 1-under-par 71 to finish the two-day event at 143, 1-under. Winners Jim Perkins and Mike Jacobsen of Inglewood Golf Course carded a 136.

Baseball

Jeremy Groth of Curlew hit an inside-the-park home run and finished with two runs and two runs batted in to lead Class B players to a 10-3 win over 2A players in the first all-star feeder game at Rogers.

Northwest Christian’s Zach Strandy earned the win, striking out four in five innings. Blake Wolf of Colton, playing for the 2A team, struck out seven in four innings.

The series continues today with three games at Rogers, starting at 10 a.m. After the event, 10 players will be selected to the state all-star games, June 10 and 11 in East Wenatchee.
