An early-morning fire that destroyed a building at Ballou Junior High School on Sunday was arson, authorities said.

Fire crews responded to a call by a state patrol officer about 3:20 a.m. and found flames shooting out the roof and sides of the building, which was being remodeled for use as a library and classrooms.

The fire caused an estimated $2 million in damage. No injuries were reported and no arrests were made Sunday.

The 25,000-square-foot school was to remain closed today.
