Ex-Major League Pitcher Dies
Donald Liddle, 75, a former major leaguer who threw the pitch that became one of baseball’s greatest defensive plays, died Monday of lung cancer in Mount Carmel, Ill.
Liddle was on the mound in Game One of the 1954 World Series at New York’s Polo Grounds when Willie Mays made his famous over-the-shoulder catch running down a 460-foot fly ball hit by Cleveland’s Vic Wertz.
In South Pasadena, Calif., Eddie Gregson, who saddled 1982 Kentucky Derby winner Gato Del Sol, has died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The body of Gregson, 61, was found by his wife Sunday night in his office.
An Ohio man was killed during a drag race exhibition when the parachutes that stop his jet dragster failed to open.
Jack Dustman, 41, of Malvern, Ohio, was entertaining a crowd of about 8,000 in Grand Bend, Ontario, with a solo performance Sunday that reached a speed of 198.85 mph when his vehicle rolled several times before crashing into trees.
