Counterfeiters Using Bogus County Checks

From Staff Reports

Shoshone County clerks have reported two counterfeit checks allegedly cashed in the Seattle area last month.

The counterfeiters created county checks that looked like employee payroll and claim checks. The signatures of both the treasurer and the clerk had been forged. Both checks were for more than $400, said Carletta Neubauer, chief deputy clerk for the county’s payroll.

“They looked exactly like ours, but they’re not,” she said.

County clerks traced the stolen checks through the county’s May bank statement. The county does not have to pay the money, she said. An investigation is continuing.
