Seafarer Completes Apprentice Program
Seafarer L.G. Johnson, Spokane, graduated from the unlicensed apprentice program at the Paul Hall Center for Maritime Training and Education in Piney Point, Md. The nine-month program teaches the basic skills of seamanship necessary to work aboard a U.S. flag commercial vessel. As part of his training, Johnson worked aboard the Calvin P. Titus, a fully operational U.S. flag merchant vessel, for three months.
Johnson is the son of Rita Day, Leonard Johnson and James Henshaw, all of Spokane.
The following Eastern Washington University students have been awarded $2000 Presidential Scholarships for the 2000-2001 school year. These scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement in high school.
Holly Rushing, daughter of Robert and Barbara Rushing, Spokane, a June graduate of Rogers High School. She played varsity soccer for four years and was selected the Greater Spokane League’s Most Valuable Player for Defense this year.
Theodore Stuhlmiller, Edwall, Wash., is the son of Jeff Stuhlmiller, Edwall, and Julie Christiansen, Reardan, Wash. He is a June graduate of Christian Heritage High School and was the senior class president, Associated Student Body treasurer and co-captain of the varsity basketball team.
Micaela Arnold, daughter of Michael and Teresa Arnold, Deer Park, isa June graduate of Deer Park High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society, a varsity cheerleader and was on the honor roll.
Aaron Brewer, the son of John and Elaine Brewer, Cheney, is a June graduate of Cheney High School. He was involved in the school newspaper, baseball, Speech Club and was a Running Start student.
Morgan Cerenzia, daughter of Ron and Linda Cerenzia, Mead, is a June graduate of Mt. Spokane High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society, the Associated Student Body and the varsity softball team.
Josh Erks, son of Donovan and Jan Erks, Medical Lake, is a June graduate of Medical Lake High School. He was a member of the National Honor Society, the wind ensemble, the pep band and the Young Life Club. He also played football, basketball and baseball.
Christine Talbot, daughter of Mark and Carla Talbot, Liberty Lake, is a June graduate of Central Valley High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Read Across America and the Activity League. She was also a role model for the D.A.R.E. drug abuse prevention program.
Joshua Filzen, Valleyford, is the son of James and Bev Filzen and is a June graduate of Freeman High School. He played golf, and participated in band and skiing.
