Take Me Out To The Ballgame

The true boys of summer are back.

On Tuesday, the eve of the official start of summer, the Spokane Indians begin their defense of last season’s Northwest League Class A baseball title.

And they’ll do so with a tip of the cap to some Indian greats of the past.

A snappy new entryway to Avista (formerly Seafirst) Stadium at the Interstate Fairgrounds includes monuments to the seven Indians who have reached baseball’s pinnacle, the Hall of Fame: managers Tommy Lasorda and Duke Snider, players Don Sutton, Hoyt Wilhelm, Stan Coveleski and George Kelly, and co-owner George Brett.

The shrine will be dedicated Tuesday at 5:40 p.m., which is 20 minutes before the gates officially open for the 7 p.m. game against the Eugene Emeralds.

Inside, fans will find the same upscale ballpark (with a fresh coat of paint), and the same low-end ticket prices: $6 for upper box seats, and $4 for reserved bench seats ($3 for kids 12 and under, seniors and military personnel).

And while the play on the field may not always be Hall of Fame caliber — these boys are indeed boys, some fresh out of high school — there are plenty of between-inning games and contests, not to mention antics by Otto the mascot, to keep the entertainment rolling.

Several games also feature special promotions, like the fireworks following Tuesday’s opener; a list of some major dates follows. Games begin at 7:05 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 6:05 p.m. Sunday, with 3:05 p.m. starts on July 9, July 23 and Aug. 2.

Tickets are available through the Indians office (535-2922) and G&B outlets (325-SEAT or 1-800-325-SEAT).
