Kids Will Reap This Harvest

Laura Crooks Food Editor

How sweet it is to know that by ordering two of Washington’s most popular products — Walla Walla sweet onions and Washington cherries — you can help the state’s children and families.

The area’s tasty onions and cherries are once again available via the Children’s Gift Catalog and online store through July. Orders placed through the catalog or online store will benefit the nonprofit Children’s Home Society of Washington.

About $7.50 per gift box ordered goes directly to the Children’s Home Society and its programs.

Onions and cherries are two of the most popular items, but other Washington products, including apples, pears and chocolates, are also available. For more information about the Children’s Gift Catalog or the Children’s Home Society, call (800) 817-KIDS or log on to www.givestwice.com on the Internet.

Volunteers needed

The Grace Community Learning Center, The Spokane Food Project and Spokane Tilth have teamed up to develop a community garden on the northwest corner of First Avenue and Pittsburg Street.

Organizers hope Krista Garden, which is a 4-H club project, will become a thriving garden in the East Central community that involves kids of all ages.

Volunteers are needed Sunday starting at 1 p.m. for the groundbreaking. Workers will be digging soil, making raised beds and planting. Monetary donations and garden supplies are also welcome.

Anyone interested in becoming a permanent part of the garden project is invited to stop by and find out what they can do to help.

Snack attack

According to a recent survey conducted by Tupperware, 73 percent of Americans snack at least once a day, and 39 percent report snacking more than twice per day. Twenty-three percent of those surveyed said they snack a few times a week or less, and only 4 percent said that they never snack at all. Sixty-nine percent of munchers say they try to make healthy snacking choices.
