Shaking Up Bacon
It looks like Canadian bacon, and some say it tastes like the real stuff, too. But Canadian Veggie Bacon is made from soy and vegetable proteins and has none of the cholesterol, fat or nitrates that are found in regular bacon. And the makers of Canadian Veggie Bacon tout their product as being free from genetically modified soy.
A three-slice, fat-free serving includes 80 calories, 490 milligrams sodium and 16 grams protein.
Canadian Veggie Bacon comes from Yves Fine Foods in Vancouver, British Columbia, and is one of six varieties of veggie deli products produced by the company. Yves also produces veggie burgers, hot dogs and specialty entrees, including chili and stew.
The Canadian bacon comes ready to eat straight from the package. Or it can be pan-fried or microwaved quickly to heat through.
