Obituaries

Peter Crettol Sandpoint

No service will be held for Peter Berhnhardt Crettol, 79. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Crettol, who was born in Salt Lake City, died Friday.

He grew up in Denver and Los Angeles. He married Avis Jean “Skippy” Pearson in 1937.

Mr. Crettol served with the Army in the Philippines and Korea.

After his military service he began a career as a draftsman in the aviation industry. He worked at Cape Canaveral on the intercontinental ballistic missile program.

Mr. Crettol later oversaw installation of inertial navigation systems on nuclear submarines, including the USS Nautilus. He also worked on the B-1 bomber program. He later returned to work at United Technologies, where he oversaw subcontractors during the assembly of space shuttle booster rockets.

Mr. Crettol moved to Sandpoint in 1995. He was involved in model building with a special interest in model railroads.

His wife of 53 years preceded him in death.

Survivors include a son, David Crettol of Sandpoint; three grandchildren, Cheryl, Danielle and David; and three great-grandchildren.

Leona Green Sandpoint

Graveside service for Leona Ida Green, 90, will be today at 1 p.m. at Pack River Cemetery near Sandpoint. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Green, who was born in Colburn, Idaho, died Monday.

She moved to Seymour, Ind., in 1910 and attended school there. She then worked as a seamstress and in a woolen mill.

Mrs. Green returned to Colburn in 1943 and married Oliver Owens. He preceded her in death.

She then married Claude Green in 1964. He died in 1981.

Mrs. Green participated in sewing, quilting and flower gardening.

Survivors include five sons, Jack Owens of Sandpoint, John Owens of Townsend, Mont., James Owens of Seeley Lake, Mont., Anthony Owens of Seattle and Allen Owens of Choteau, Mont.; a daughter, Elizabeth Jo Jeppeson of Naples, Idaho; a stepdaughter, Cheryl Batta of Everett; and two brothers, Kenneth Stradley of Portland and Dillard Stradley of Washington, D.C.

Glenn Clemons Spokane

Vigil service for Glenn L. Clemons, 77, will be at 8 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Clemons, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Sunday.

He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

Mr. Clemons was a truck driver for a dairy company.

He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Eagles Aerie 2 and the Teamsters Union.

His wife, Ruth, died in 1995.

He is survived by two sons, Michael Clemons of Spokane and Ronald Clemons of Mead.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Thomas More Catholic Church or Hospice of Spokane.

Lydia Greenwalt Ritzville, Wash.

Service for Lydia A. Greenwalt, 86, was held Wednesday at Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville. Vault burial followed at Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Ritzville.

Mrs. Greenwalt, a lifetime resident of Ritzville, died Saturday.

She married Pete Greenwalt in 1945, and they owned and operated Pete’s Garage in Ritzville.

She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church.

Her husband died in 1993.

Survivors include three sons, Ronald and Raymond Greenwalt, both of Ritzville, and Larry Greenwalt of Harrington, Wash.; two daughters, Nancy Fijalka of Spokane and Diane Peltier-Carpenter of Denver; two sisters, Gloria Gilliam and Alma Ferderer, both of Ritzville; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church or Ritzville Life Care Center.

Erna Whitney Cheney

Memorial service for Erna A. Whitney, 67, was held at Lincoln Heights Congregational Church on June 12. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Whitney, who was born in Grand Rapids, Minn., died June 7.

She graduated from Valleyford High School in 1952.

Mrs. Whitney worked for the telephone company for years. She married Orville Hancock, and they later divorced.

She married John Abbott, who adopted her two children in 1962.

She worked for Sears for many years and recently retired from Boeing.

In 1980 she married Stewart Whitney.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Robert Abbott; a daughter, Rebecca Light; six stepdaughters, Ruth Anderson, Diane Whitney, Dawn Yarnell, Bonnie Cozzetto, Carrie Hartley and Candis White; a stepson, Gregory Whitney; her mother, Jean Hartman; a stepsister, Donna Paras; two stepbrothers, Donald and Boyd Hartman; and five grandchildren Memorial contributions may be made to Lincoln Heights Congregational Church or the American Cancer Society.

Rodger Goldschmitz Spokane

Graveside service for Rodger L. Goldschmitz, 65, will be at 2 p.m. today at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Goldschmitz, who was born in Verndale, Minn., died Monday. He was a 60-year Spokane resident.

He was a sheet metal worker for Gayle Mechanical and was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local No. 66.

Survivors include his wife, Edith; two daughters, Sheila Rose and Lori Gravos, and a son, George Goldschmitz, all of Spokane; his mother, Olga McGrady of Spokane; his stepmother, Ethel Goldschmitz of Kent, Wash.; three sisters, Lynn Hueter of Spokane, Becky Sylvesteri of Kent and Bobbie Kelley of Kennewick; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Rosalie Zehm Fairfield

Memorial service for Rosalie A. Zehm, 62, was held June 21 at the Rosewood Cemetery in Fairfield. Spokane Cremation and Burial Society was in charge of arrangements.

Miss Zehm, who was born in Spokane, died Friday.

She graduated from Fairfield High School and later from Pacific Lutheran University, Lutheran Bible Institute and Eastern Washington University.

Miss Zehm taught school in Ephrata, Wash., for 24 years.

Survivors include a sister, Darlene Crosby, and a brother, Robert Zehm.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Leo Yeager Rochester, Wash.

Graveside service for Leo C. Yeager, 69, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Grand Mound Cemetery, which is south of Olympia. Mills and Mills Funeral Home in Olympia is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Yeager, who was born in Fort Lewis, Wash., died June 9. He was a former 20-year Spokane resident.

He served in the Air Force from 1949 to 1967 and held the rank of captain.

Mr. Yeager married Donna Owens in 1952.

He worked for Wal-Mart and Social Security after his retirement from the military.

Mr. Yeager moved to Alaska in 1990 and then to Rochester around 1995.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, David Yeager of Spokane, and Robert, Eric and Stephen Yeager, all of Rochester; a daughter, Maxine Headley of Palmer, Alaska; a brother, George Yeager of Olympia; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Vernon Jauch Spokane

Graveside service for Vernon B. Jauch, 83, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jauch, who was born in Shelby, Neb., died Sunday.

He worked for U S West for 23 years and was a member of Pioneers for Telephone Co.

His wife, Margaret, preceded him in death.

He is survived by a sister, Inez Edwards of Willits, Calif.

Lillian (McConville) Coughlin Spokane

Funeral Mass for Lillian E. (McConville) Coughlin, 88, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Coughlin, who was born in Ellendale, N.D., died Saturday. She was a 58-year Spokane resident.

She graduated from State Normal Industrial School in Ellendale and worked as a teacher in North Dakota.

She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign wars Post 1474, St. Rose of Lima Guild at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Marycliff Parent Alumni and the Double D’s Square Dancers. She also was a former member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, was a Camp Fire Girls leader, and volunteered at Meals on Wheels and for Day Out For The Blind.

Her husband, Bernard McConville, died in 1983. Her second husband, John Coughlin, died in 1998.

Survivors include daughters, Patricia McConville-Reade and Helen McConville-Evans; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

William `Trader Bill’ Lewis Spokane

Service for William E. “Trader Bill” Lewis, 81, will be at 1 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Lewis, who was born in Usk, Wash., died Sunday. He was a 40-year Spokane resident.

He graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1938, and married Rachel Hansen in 1955.

Mr. Lewis worked in real estate and was named Realtor of the Year in 1982.

He was a member of the Spokane Association of Realtors and was a 20-year member of the Boy Scouts of America.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bill Lewis Jr. and Davis Lewis; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Inland Northwest Council or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Helen Strait Spokane

Visitation for Helen M. Strait, 93, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Strait, who was born in Langford, S.D., died Sunday.

She moved to Spokane in 1945 and worked for Swift and Co. until 1960. She later worked for Newberrys from 1962 to 1972.

Her husband, Clarence, died in 1955.

Survivors include two brothers, Van Watters of Eugene, Ore., and Gail Watters of Live Oak, Calif.; and a sister, Mabel Underwood of Appleton, Wis.

Ellen Braden Spokane

Funeral Mass for Ellen K. Braden, 86, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Jesuit House Chapel. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Braden, who was born in Butte, Mont., died Monday. She was a 58-year Spokane resident.

She worked in jewelry repair.

Miss Braden is survived by a sister, Lorraine Barry of Spokane.

Illeen Dinnen Spokane

Funeral Mass for Illeen Dinnen, 64, will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church. Private inurnment will be held. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Dinnen, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Sunday.

She worked as a bookkeeper in the restaurant business.

Survivors include her husband, James; two sons, Kevin Dinnen of Spokane and Michael Dinnen of Bellevue, Wash.; a daughter, Suzanne Dinnen of Spokane; a brother, Patrick Hurley of Tacoma; and a sister, Frances Raymond of Spokane.
