Maybe it was the haircut.

The Spokane Chiefs’ Tim Smith got his long hair clipped last week, just in case he might have to meet new people should his number be called in Sunday’s National Hockey League Entry Draft.

It was. By Vancouver.

The Canucks made Smith their ninth-round pick in Calgary.

The Chiefs’ leading scorer with 26 goals and 70 assists, Smith will return to Spokane in August to start his 19-year-old season.

A skilled playmaker who was second in the Western Hockey League in assists last season, Smith is trying to overcome the knock on his size. The Spokane center is listed at 5-9, 165.
