Indians Hold Off Rally In 9Th
Spokane Indians reliever Ryan Bukvich struck out the final batter with the bases loaded to preserve a 2-1 win over the Vancouver Canadians on Wednesday in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The win was the Indians’ fourth straight and third straight over Vancouver.
With Spokane leading 2-1 in the ninth inning, the Canadians mounted a comeback. Joe Cirone singled before Bukvich walked the next two batters to load the bases.
Christian Reyes hit a hard liner to first baseman Chad Santos, who made the force out at home. With two outs and a full count, Bukvich struck out Jason Clements swinging to end the game and improve the Indians’ record to 7-2 in the Northwest League.
Vancouver slipped to 2-7.
Spokane left hander Carlos Martinez, who got the win in a scorer’s decision, allowed one hit in two-plus innings. He replaced starter Zach McClellan, who only allowed one infield hit and a walk in the first four innings.
Spokane scored its runs in the fifth, making the score 2-0. Santos led off the inning with a single to right and then stole second. He was advanced to third on a Ben Cordova groundout.
Henrry Alvarez’s grounder to second was bobbled, allowing him to reach base and Santos to score. Juan Guzman’s RBI single to center field scored Alvarez. Vancouver scored in the seventh on Matt Bowser’s single.
