Cda Schools Celebrate Reading
The Coeur d’Alene School District’s celebration of “Read Across America” week begins today.
The National Education Association began the annual event in 1997, hoping to encourage adults to read to children. Last year, about 20 million adults and children participated in the event, which centers on Dr. Seuss’s birthday on Thursday.
Community members will read to Canfield Middle School students today. Thursday, Borah Elementary School Principal Joel Palmer will dress as The Cat in the Hat and will read to students.
Winton Elementary School third-graders will visit Kootenai Medical Center to present books to the pediatric and maternity wards. Winton also will have an all-school assembly and birthday cake honoring Dr. Seuss. Fernan Elementary School will celebrate the event Friday with skits and guest readers.
Hayden Lake Elementary School will award miles for minutes of reading, with a goal of stretching miles earned all the way to Springfield, Mass., the birthplace of Dr. Seuss. Sorenson Elementary School is holding a book fair and its annual learning fair.
