Input Sought On Air-Quality Permit

As part of an ongoing effort to comply with federal requirements, state officials want public comments on a Rathdrum company seeking an air-quality permit.

GEA Integrated Cooling Technologies Inc. makes fiberglass-reinforced plastic products such as panels used as fan shrouds. The plant also does some woodworking.

The plant applied for an operating permit under Clean Air Act requirements.

The public has until April 14 to comment, or until March 31 to request a public hearing on the permit. Hearing requests should include a statement explaining the need for a hearing.

The plant’s emissions are mostly volatile organic compounds, which can cause smog. The plant is categorized as a major source of hazardous air pollution because it releases “well above 10 tons per year of styrene,” according to the Idaho Division of Environmental Quality. Styrene evaporates in the air but lends to smog formation when combined with other smog-causing compounds.

The state will review comments on the GEA plant and develop a proposed permit to be reviewed by EPA.

Information about the permit is available to the public at DEQ Coeur d’Alene offices at 2110 Ironwood Parkway or a the Coeur d’Alene Public Library.
