Hooks Will Sing With Symphony

Travis Rivers

Soprano Bridgett Hooks thought she would be spending this week in New York preparing for the Mahler symphonies, the Beethoven Ninth and the Verdi Requiem coming up for her later this season. Instead, Hooks is coming to Spokane, substituting for a recuperating Julie Newell as soloist with the Spokane Symphony in Richard Strauss’ “Four Last Songs.”

Hooks has performed Strauss’ demanding final work several times in the past few seasons, along with her performances with major ensembles such as the Cleveland Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony and the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra. Last summer Hooks sang her first Aida at the Aspen Festival.

Fabio Mechetti will conduct the concert, which also includes Wagner’s “Tannhauser” Overture and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 (the “Pathetique”). Marjorie Halvorson, artistic director of Spokane Opera, will discuss the music of tonight’s concert in a pre-concert lecture in the Opera House auditorium at 7 p.m.

The Spokane Symphony concert begins at 8 p.m. at the Opera House. Tickets range from $33 to $16 and are available at the symphony ticket office, 624-1200, and through G&B Select-a-Seat.
