Utah Valley Sweeps Cardinals

James Dayley pitched a three-hit shut-out in the second game Saturday, and Utah Valley State swept North Idaho 5-3, 5-0 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Orem, Utah.

Dayley (2-2) hit three batters, but worked out of every jam.

Rob Sumner and Clifton Vancleave had three hits apiece for NIC in the first game. The Cardinals stranded six runners in scoring position, all with less than two outs.

Beau Craig went 3 for 4, with three RBIs and two runs, and 20th-ranked Southern Cal (18-9, 2-0) stormed past Washington State 12-7 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball.

Craig had a two-run triple to center during a six-run fourth. Justin Gemoll and Josh Persell followed with back-to-back homers, helping to push USC’s lead to 12-1.

Rik Currier (6-2) allowed three runs and seven hits in 7-2/3 innings. Cougars starter Tyson Thompson allowed six hits and five runs in 2-2/3 innings. No WSU starter has earned a win since Feb. 13.

WSU’s Stefan Bailie hit his team-high seventh homer, a three-run shot in the ninth.

Junior Rob Henkel (4-1) struck out 18 and catcher Forrest Johnson homered to lead off the ninth, giving UCLA (15-10, 1-0) a 2-1 win over Washington (7-12, 0-1) in a Pac-10 game at Los Angeles.

The Huskies scored in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by freshman Justin Drake, out of Ferris High.

Freshman Eric Rodland hit his first career homer, a three-run blast to cap a six-run fourth, and Gonzaga (12-11, 5-4) notched an 11-5 West Coast Conference win at San Francisco (16-11, 3-5).

Senior Jason Bay went 3 for 3, including a leadoff homer in the fifth. Bay’s fifth homer of the season gave him 25 for his career, eighth all-time in GU history.

Senior Steve Bennett (4-2) pitched a complete-game, seven-hitter, striking out three and allowing three earned runs.

A two-out single in the 10th completed Whitman’s 1-0, 15-14 sweep of visiting Whitworth (6-12, 1-4) in a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Walla Walla.

The Missionaries (7-8 overall) won the opener with a one-out, RBI single in the seventh. Pirates loser Matt Squires allowed just four hits and struck out five.

Chemeketa defeated Community Col leges of Spokane 10-7 to become the only team with a 2-0 record at the six-team Spokane Athletic Invitational at Spokane Falls CC.

CCS, the only 0-2 team at the tourney, led 6-5 when Chemeketa scored five in the eighth.

Softball

North Idaho went 3-0 on the day at the NWAACC preseason tournament in Richland.

The Cardinals opened with a 5-0 win over Green River. Kelli Smith pitched a three-hitter, striking out 13 and walking none, and Katelyn Tatum went 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

Mandy Lawson’s RBI single to left in the eighth then gave NIC a 1-0 win over Olympic. The ending was determined by an international tiebreaker, in which a runner is placed at second base with two outs.

Laura Breers hit a three-run homer and Lisa Allegrucci struck out seven to complete NIC’s day, a 16-2, five-inning win over Grays Harbor.

Track and field

Jenni Saling of Community Colleges of Spokane set two meet records at the American Community Colleges Elite All-American Invitational at the Olympic Training Center in San Diego.

Saling finished the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 13.84 seconds and the 1,500 in 4:37.02. She shattered the 800 record by more than 3 seconds.

Karie Pruett of CCS won the women’s javelin with a throw of 138 feet, 8 inches.

For the CCS men, Seth Morris placed third in the 200 in 21.84 and Todd Fayant was third in the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:38.04.

Crew

Washington State’s varsity 8 upset Victoria and Oregon State in the featured race of a women’s competition at Wawawai Landing.

The Cougars completed the 2,000-meter course in a season-best 6:43.5. WSU won three of five races on the day.

Gonzaga and Western Washington split seven races during a men’s and women’s event at Long Lake.

GU won the women’s varsity 8, women’s JV 8 and men’s novice 8. WWU won three races and finished in a dead heat with the Zags in the women’s novice 8 `A’ race.
