Eagles Land 300-Pound Offensive Lineman From Yakima

Drew Kok, a 6-foot-2, 300-pound offensive lineman from West Valley High School in Yakima, has signed a letter of intent with Eastern Washington, Eagles coach Paul Wulff announced Monday.

Kok, a first-team All-Mid Valley League selection on both offense and defense, caught the attention of Wulff and his staff at EWU’s 1999 lineman’s camp.

“We really liked his aggressiveness and size,” Wulff said. “We feel he’ll add some toughness and attitude to our offensive line.”

Wulff also announced the addition of five other incoming freshmen who will join the Eagles in the fall - Keith Garner, a 6-1, 205-pound All-Great Northern League linebacker from Chewelah; Martese Henderson, 5-8, 170, running back, Spanaway, Wash.; Mike Koenen, 5-10, 160, kicker, and Paul Terrell, 6-4, 215, tight end, both Ferndale, Wash.; and Neal Sharma, 6-3, 190, quarterback, San Jose, Calif.

College track and field

Leo Suzuki of Whitworth, fourth in the 400 meters at 48.85 seconds in the Washington State Open last weekend, was named Northwest Conference’s men’s track athlete of the week.

Suzuki, a sophomore and the only non-Division I athlete in the event, also anchored the Pirates’ 4x400-meter relay to an NCAA Division III-provisional qualifying time of 3:17.36.

Community College of Spokane athletes were third in the women’s heptathlon and fourth in the men’s decathlon after the first day of the NWAACC Multi-Events Championships at Spokane Falls.

Amber Miller of CCS had 2,440 points, 136 behind leader Amy Hill of Lane. CCS’ other entry, Rachel Johnson, is 11th in the 13-women field with 2,019 points.

David Lemen of Clackamas is a runaway leader and on a record pace in the decathlon with 3,827 points. That’s 612 points ahead of the runner-up.

CCS’ Ed Swartz has 3,148 for fourth with Ryan Berry (2,942) seventh, Erik Kjall (2,872) eighth and Michael Morrison (2,853) ninth.

Golf

Kylie Smith, Shelly Russell and Jennifer Dolph led Eastern Washington to third place in the Wildcat Invitational women’s tournament in Ogden, Utah.

Smith shot a 79-76-155, 7 over par, to tie for fifth; Russell had 83-74-157; and Dolph 81-79-160 as Eastern compiled a 36-hole team total of 636, 22 shots behind winner Brigham Young.

Eastern Washington’s 305 is 18 shots back of leader Cal State Northridge after the first of three rounds of the Big Sky Conference men’s tournament in Oxnard, Calif.

EWU’s leading scorer is Trevor Fox with a 2-over 74, tied for 12th. The Eagles’ Keith Rose shot 76, Kyle Kelly had a 77 and Mark Poirer a 78.

Anthony Marciano of Northridge leads by three strokes with a 5-under 67.
