Bengals Take Two In Finale
Derek Bruce tripled and homered in the opener, and had a two-run single in the eighth inning of the second game as visiting Lewiston swept Sandpoint 14-2, 11-5 on Saturday to complete the Border League baseball season.
Colin Moss won the five-inning opener, allowing four hits and striking out four. Bruce drove in single runs with his homer in the third and triple in the sixth.
Four consecutive singles and two Sandpoint errors helped the Bengals to a six-run eighth in the second game.
The outcome settled the match-ups for the A-1 Region I tournament, which begins Monday with a pair of 4 p.m. loser-out games. No. 5 Sandpoint (8-13 overall) plays at No. 4 Moscow (10-12), while No. 6 Post Falls (5-17) travels to No. 3 Lake City (9-14).
No. 2 Lewiston (18-4) and No. 1 Coeur d’Alene (16-5) have byes until Tuesday.
In other season-enders, Chad McCall drove in the winning run in the opener and pitched a three-hitter in the second game to guide Clarkston (9-6) to a 5-4, 5-3 sweep of visiting Cheney (6-9)… . Jeff Banich had four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the second, and Colville (11-4) defeated West Valley 11-6 to complete a road sweep. Colville stomped the Eagles (1-14) in the opener 14-1.
Softball
Brittenie West pitched a two-hitter and Sara Jefferson a three-hitter, and visiting Lewiston (13-6) swept Sandpoint 7-0, 7-0 to complete the Border League season. Logan Free of the Bulldogs (2-16) struck out 12 in the second game. The same teams will meet at 4 p.m. Monday in Lewiston to open the A-1 Region I tournament. The winner will play at No. 2 Lake City on Tuesday. The loser will be eliminated… . Also in league season-enders, Leigh Williams singled during an eighth-inning tiebreaker to score Haley Henry, and West Valley (8-6) capped a 6-4, 1-0 home sweep of Frontier League No. 1 seed Colville (9-5). Megan Sherrill’s three-run double in the sixth guided the Eagles’ first-game win… . Candice Birchell pitched a four-hitter on Friday, striking out six and walking none, as visiting Cheney (5-10) defeated Clarkston 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader to eliminate the Bantams (3-12) from district play.
