Beginning in 2008, Washington students must pass the 10th-grade Washington Assessment of Student Learning to graduate.

The WASL, which is at the heart of the state’s education reform, is a set of exams in writing, reading, mathematics and communication. Additional subjects will be added. Students take the tests in the fourth, seventh and 10th grades.

Idaho’s Legislature this year approved tough new standards for what students will have to know before they can graduate. The standards span the areas of reading, writing, math, science, social studies and health. They are due to take effect in 2005, but a lack of funding to develop the tests could delay that time line.
