Idaho Golfers Set For State-Qualifiers
State-qualifying high school golf tournaments will be held today and Wednesday for North Idaho A-1, A-2 and A-3 teams.
The Intermountain League will hold the A-2 District I-II tournament today at Stoneridge Country Club in Blanchard.
The top three boys and top two girls teams and at least the top seven boys individuals and top five girls advance to state.
Additional teams can advance to state by shooting the qualifying standard - 325 for boys, 430 for girls.
Kellogg’s boys and St. Maries’ girls are the defending district champions.
Kellogg’s boys and girls won league dual titles. Kellogg and Lakeland will contend for the boys district crown while Kellogg’s girls are favored.
Joe Finley of Lakeland and Leslie Hodge of Kellogg are the defending boys district medalists. Finley, Ryan Bailey and Tyson Kovash of Kellogg and Scott Solum of Bonners Ferry are the top contenders for medalist.
Leslie Hodge of Kellogg is the defending girls district medalist and is heavily favored to repeat.
The boys tee off today at 9, followed by the girls at 10.
State will be held May 15-16 at Blackfoot.
The A-3 District I-II tournament will be held today at Bryden Canyon Golf Course in Lewiston.
The top two boys teams and winning girls team and top four boys individuals and top two girls advance to state.
Additional teams can advance to state by shooting the qualifying standard - 325 for boys, 430 for girls.
Boys tee off at 11:30, followed by about 45 minutes by the girls.
Wallace’s girls and boys are the defending district champions. Wallace’s girls placed third at state last year.
Contenders for district boys medalist include seniors Dustin DeVoe and Erik Christensen of Wallace and Brandon Palmer of Falls Christian Academy.
District girls medalist contenders include Wallace juniors Danielle DeVoe and Shelby Gerger.
State will be held May 16-17 at Blackfoot.
The Inland Empire League will stage its A-1 Region I tournament Wednesday at the Bryden Canyon Golf Course in Lewiston.
The top two boys and girls teams and top six boys and girls individuals qualify for state. Additional teams can advance to state by shooting the qualifying standard - 315 for boys, 405 for girls.
Lewiston’s boys and Lake City’s girls are the defending regional champs. Both are heavily favored to repeat.
Coeur d’Alene, Lake City, Post Falls and Sandpoint figure to battle for the second boys team berth.
Contenders for regional boys medalist include seniors Brad Arnn of Coeur d’Alene (if academically eligible), Cameron Chesnut of Post Falls, Pete Williams of Moscow, Pat Jennings of Lake City and Jason Huff of Lewiston.
Contenders for regional girls medalist honor include seniors Sarah Robinson of LC, Laura Jefferson and Virginia Anderson of Lewiston and sophomorew Summer Scanlon, Jodi Edwards and Roslyn Folk of LC.
The boys tee off at noon, followed by the girls at 1 p.m.
State will be held May 19-20 at Idaho Falls.
Coaches resigns
Geary Jerde has resigned as Coeur d’Alene girls soccer coach.
Jerde, who coached his daughter for two of his three years as head coach, said his primary reason for stepping down is to watch his boys play the sport. One will be a junior at CdA next year and the youngest will be an eighth grader.
Another contributing factor in Jerde’s resignation is his body was telling him to slow down. He had a fourth hip replacement surgery in January.
CdA finished third at state last fall, defeating rival Lake City 3-2 in double overtime. The Viks finished fourth and fifth at state in Jerde’s first two seasons.
“It’s just time,” Jerde said. “The kids were dynamite and the administration was very supportive. There’s no other reason for me to quit except to get on with other things in life. I’ll still be around. It’s time to give my boys attention.”
Jerde, a certified financial planner, expects a number of quality coaches to apply for the job. CdA will begin accepting applications after the school board accepts Jerde’s resignation.
Matt Grahn has resigned after one season as Moscow’s head boys basketball coach.
He resigned to pursue a college assistant coaching job, Moscow athletic director Dave Lavender said.
Two other head coaching jobs are open at Moscow. Longtime cross country Bob Weisel and boys soccer coach Bruce Rowton have resigned.
Rowton coached Moscow to the State A-1 soccer title last fall. Moscow, which entered state as the No. 3 seed from North Idaho, knocked off Boise 1-0 in overtime.
Application deadline for all three jobs is Friday. Lavender hopes to fill the positions next week.
