Lewiston’S Moss Gathers Win
Colin Moss retired the final 11 batters and allowed no earned runs, and Lewiston defeated visiting Moscow 4-3 on Wednesday to eliminate the Bears from the A-1 Region I baseball tournament.
Moss (5-1) pitched a three-hitter, striking out five and walking four.
Moscow (11-14) scored three runs in the top of the third, highlighted by Luke Matthews’ two-run double.
In Lewiston’s third, Ryan Clark’s two-run single after back-to-back intentional walks tied the game. The go-ahead run scored on a groundout.
Lewiston (19-5) will play Friday against today’s loser between Lake City and Coeur d’Alene.
Softball
Brittenie West pitched a two-hitter, and Tarah McCallister and Katey Allen tripled to guide Lewiston to a 3-0 win over visiting Moscow in a loser-out game of the A-1 Region I tournament. Lewiston (17-9) will play Friday against today’s loser between Lake City and Coeur d’Alene. Kody Kinziger pitched a two-hitter for the Bears (11-15).
Washington baseball
Ben Woodard struck out seven and went 3 for 4 to lead Cheney to a 12-5 win over Sunnyside in a loser-out game of the Region IV 3A baseball tournament at Cheney.
Cheney’s Miles Strampe went 2 for 4 with three runs batted in, including a two-run double for an 8-3 lead in the fourth inning.
Adam Pegg added three runs and 3-for-3 hitting for Cheney, and Tyler Marsh went 2 for 2 with two RBIs.
Cheney (12-10) advances to the double-elimination portion of the tournament. The Blackhawks play at Mid-Valley No. 1 West Valley of Yakima (15-5) at 4 p.m. Friday.
Also in the tourney, Bryan Johnson threw a no-hitter as Selah defeated Eastmont 2-0 in a loser-out game. Selah (19-3) will play at Frontier No. 1 Colville (14-6) at 4 p.m. Friday.
Freshman Greg Smith settled down after a shaky first to strike out seven in five innings, helping Lakeside to a 14-4 win over visiting Medical Lake in the District 7 2A tournament. Smith surrendered a two-out grand slam to Billy Gaines on a 1-2 pitch in the first. Lakeside tied the game with two-run homers by Josh Taylor in the first and Reed Fessel in the second. Smith had a two-run single during Lakeside’s nine-run third. Lakeside (16-5) will play for the district title at 1 p.m. Saturday in Pullman. Medical Lake (15-6) must win two games at the same site to qualify for state… . Also in the tournament, Johnie McCanna had three RBIs and pitched no-hit relief to guide Chewelah (12-9) to a five-inning, 14-4 win over visiting Riverside in a game suspended from Tuesday. McCanna, 2 for 3 with two runs, struck out three in two innings. Mike Carpenter added two RBIs for the Cougars. Chewelah plays at No. 1 Pullman (16-4) at 4 p.m. today. The winner will advance to play Lakeside, and the loser will meet Medical Lake. Riverside (5-14) was eliminated.
Jason Fox (6-1) homered twice and scattered seven hits as Garfield-Palouse (15-5) defeated visiting Waitsburg 12-2 in a loser-out game of the District 9 B tournament. Fox and Mitch Kriebel had four RBIs apiece and hit back-to-back homers in the second. Gar-Pal will play DeSales at 11 a.m. Saturday at Walla Walla. Touchet (18-3) and Colton (17-1) will follow at 1 p.m. Two other games will decide three berths to state.
Brewster defeated Okanogan 11-0 in the title game of the Caribou Trail tournament. Okanogan will play Northeast A No. 1 Colfax (16-4) at noon Monday in Moses Lake to open the Bi-District 1A tournament. Brewster will open vs. NEA No. 2 Kettle Falls (7-10) at 2:30 p.m. Both games are loser-out.
