Eastern Washington University will stage a benefit concert Sunday night to assist Spokane classical music mainstay Verne Windham with his medical expenses.

Windham, music director of public radio station KPBX and a leader in several community groups, is recovering from successful surgery for throat cancer last month.

Sunday’s concert features performances by three winners of musical competitions at EWU - violinist Sharon Wherland of Pullman High School, and Eastern students Chien-ru (Angela) Shen on piano and Roberta Morton on cello - as well as the the school’s wind ensemble and symphony orchestra.

It begins at 7:30 p.m. in Showalter Auditorium on the Cheney campus. Admission is free, but donations are requested.
