Hattenburg Repeats As All-Pac 10

Washington State senior Ray Hattenburg ended his stellar base- ball career by Monday being named to the All-Pacific-10 team for a second consecutive year.

Hattenburg, a Mead High graduate, led the Cougars with a .359 batting average, finishing with a 5-for-5 performance Sunday. He played in 55 of 56 games, starting at third base, first base and left field. In Pac-10 play, the switch-hitter batted 400. He had 25 multiple-hit games to also lead the team.

Hattenburg is one of six two-time selections to the Pac-10 team.

“It’s a nice honor to be recognized after working so hard and putting everything I had into this season,” Hattenburg said. “I had a great four years at Washington State that I wouldn’t trade for anything. This award just caps a weekend that has already been unbelievable.”

He leaves his name in several categories in the WSU record books. His .355 career average ranks eighth all-time, and he ranks fifth in career hits (255), doubles (56) and at-bats (719).

Four Cougars earned honorable mention - senior Matt O’Brien, who led the Cougars in several pitching categories, including wins (he was 10-5) and ERA (3.94); redshirt freshman infielder Stefan Bailie, who hit .315; junior outfielder/pitcher Jason Grove, who fought off injuries to hit .314 and be an honorable mention a second straight year; and senior shortstop Shawn Stevenson, who had a .309 career batting average.

Basketball

Alex Hernandez, a 6-foot-4, 204-pound wing from Casper (Wyo.) Community College, has signed a letter-of-intent to attend Gonzaga University, men’s coach Mark Few announced.

Hernandez, a native of Las Vegas, Nev., averaged 23.3 points per game, 6.1 rebounds and 2.2 steals a game as a sophomore this past season. He was a third-team junior college All-America selection and also earned Region IX player of the year honors.

“Alex is a great scorer. He has proven it at the high school and community college level, and we think he’ll be able to score at this level,” said Few. “ He’s a physical wing who is tough to defend.”

Golf

With Chana Bonnett (par 73) and Shannon Thomas (80) running 1-2, Community Colleges of Spokane has a 13 shot lead in the women’s division after the first round of the NWAACC Championships in Tacoma.

CCS leads Columbia Basin 240-253.

CCS is fifth in the men’s race with a 303, 19 shots behind leader Lower Columbia. Leading the Sasquatch is Billy Thompson with a 2-over 73.

Indian Canyon pro Gary Lindeblad shot a 3-under-par 69 to be in good striking position after the first round of the 54-hole BMW Washington Open at Snoqualmie, Wash.
