Chalk Art Contest Scheduled

The third annual “ChalkArtWalk,” a chalk art contest on the sidewalks of Hillyard, is scheduled June 11. This year’s theme is “Community.”
Contestants sign up at the corner of Market and Olympic streets and are assigned a sidewalk square, issued chalk, and given between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to complete their piece. The Brass Quartet of the Spokane Symphony will play between noon and 2 p.m.
The contest, sponsored by Accent Frames and other friends of the Hillyard business community, is open to all ages (children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult). For information, call 492-6072.
Civic scholarships
The Spokane Civic Theatre is offering two new scholarships for students wishing to attend the theater’s Performing Arts Day Camp or the Theatre School.
The scholarships are the result of grants from Citigroup Foundation, (the philanthropic arm of Solomon Smith Barney) and the Sahlin Foundation.

Auditions
Allegro’s Royal Fireworks Festival will hold auditions for unfilled roles for its Riverdell Players next Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at Opportunity Presbyterian Church, 202 N. Pines. The costumed players recreate historical characters from England, circa 1749. The festival, which runs July 29-30, also seeks costumers and set-prop builders. Dance Theatre Northwest, directed by Janet Wilder, will hold company auditions June 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Academy of Dance, 820 W. Sprague. Auditions will be open to intermediate-advanced and advanced dancers, ages 12 and older, who take at least three ballet technique classes per week.
Performance opportunities include the Dec. 10 performance of “The Toy Shelf”; the Spring Concert at The Met; performances with the Spokane Opera; “Dancing Start,” a school lecture demonstration program; and “Opening Doors to Dance,” an in-studio performance series. Classes and workshops
Spokane Children’s Theatre’s “Northwest Regional Children’s Theatre Play Festival” will be held June 17-18 at Spokane Community College. Workshops - including mime, creative dramatics, dance, stage makeup, dialect, vocal, auditioning and improvisation - will be offered for theater lovers of all ages.

Ballet Arts Academy is offering a three-week summer dance camp for children ages 6 and up. Instruction in ballet, modern, jazz, character and drama will be offered. Classes are from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., four days each week. The camp begins June 19 and runs through July 8.
Intermediate and advanced summer dance workshops for students ages 12 and older will run July 10-28. Instruction in ballet, pointe, modern, jazz and flamenco will be offered. Classes are from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Corbin Art Center’s summer quarter classes begin June 19. There will be a Corbin Kids Summer Workshop Program for children ages 3-11 from June 19-Aug. 11, featuring weekly one- and two-hour fine arts and crafts workshops.
Adult workshops include a garden and landscape workshop series presented by Debbie Clem, and a six-week course in summer watercolor painting presented by Tom Quinn.

The Summer Art Institute at the Spokane Art School is offering classes for children ages 4 through high school. Classes run Monday-Thursday, beginning June 19, for two weeks each session, through Aug. 24. A variety of age-appropriate classes will be offered. The Art School is located at 920 N. Howard. Sleepy Hollow Children’s Theatre, in cooperation with the Lake City Playhouse, will offer summer workshops and productions of “Why Two Kay?” and “Saved by the Farce,” at the Lake City Playhouse, 1320 E. Garden, Coeur d’Alene.
The 10-day workshops on theater production will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and culminate in four performances. Workshops are limited to 50 students. All roles are speaking/singing with multiple lines. The cost is $165; scholarships are available.
Session I (ages 7-16) runs from June 19-July 1. Session II (ages 12-18) runs from July 5-15. Session III (ages 7-16) runs from July 17-29. Session IV (ages 7-16) runs from July 31-Aug. 12.
