Ewu Orchestra, Violinist Performing At First Public Classical Concert At Fox

The first public classical concert in the Fox Theater will take place Tuesday, featuring a 13-year-old violin virtuoso from Vancouver, B.C.

Caitlin Tully will join the Eastern Washington University Orchestra for a performance Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Fox, 1005 W. Sprague.

The program will repeat Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Showalter Auditorium on EWU’s Cheney campus. Admission to both concerts is free, although donations are accepted.

Tully, who began her studies at age 4 after asking her parents for a violin for Christmas, made her debut with the Vancouver Symphony at age 10. A two-time grand-prize winner at the Seattle Young Artists’ Festival, she also has performed with the Victoria Symphony, Federal Way (Wash.) Philharmonic and Orchestra Seattle, among others.

She has received high praise from teachers at some of the nation’s most prestigious music schools, including The Juilliard School, The Cleveland Institute of Music, Manhattan School for Strings and the Oberlin Conservatory.

With the EWU orchestra, Tully will perform Bruch’s Violin Concerto in G Minor. The program also includes Bernstein’s “Overture to Candide” and Dvorak’s Eighth Symphony.

The Spokane Symphony bought the Fox Theater in September and plans to renovate it as a performing arts hall. The symphony played a private concert in the theater Nov. 11 as part of a gala celebration for donors.

Tuesday’s concert also will mark the debut of Fabio Costa, the new associate conductor of the Spokane Symphony, as director of the EWU orchestra.
