Pirates Prevail, Gain Final

Area men’s basketball

Gunner Olsen and Bryan DePew scored 15 points apiece to lead the Whitworth Pirates to a 76-74 victory over Western Baptist in the first round of the Snake River Shootout men’s basketball tournament in Lewiston Friday.

Kelson Ramey finished with 12 points and four assists for Whitworth (2-0). Kyle Jensen and Pat Luce added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Chase Williams pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

The Whits shot 60 percent (30 of 50) from the floor.

Western Baptist (4-1) trailed by 10 at the half.

Whitworth takes on host Lewis-Clark State for the title tonight. Lewis-Clark State pounded Northwest Christian College 79-61 in Friday’s other game.

Steven Bonner buried 10 of his 15 shots from the floor and scored a game-high 23 points to propel the North Idaho Cardinals to a romp over Capilano (British Columbia).

Marko Kandic added 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for NIC, which held Capilano to just 21 points in the first half.

Former North Idaho and LewisClark State standout Chris Harrison scored a game-high 26 points to power the All-Stars to a victory over the Sasquatch in the first round of the NIC Thanksgiving Tournament in Coeur d’Alene.

Marlon Bailey, who was a starting guard for the Washington Huskies, added 22 points for the victors.

CCS (0-1) was led by the 21 points and game-high 12 rebounds of Andre Ervin.

CCS plays Capilano in the consolation final tonight before NIC meets the All-Stars for the title.
